Groups planning a Sierra Nevada golf trip almost always ask the same question: Graeagle or Lake Tahoe? Both are within two hours of Reno. Both have championship courses. But they are genuinely different trips — and the right answer depends on what your group is after.

The courses

Graeagle has five courses within ten minutes of each other. The flagship is Grizzly Ranch Golf Club: semi-private, slope 140, consistently ranked among Northern California's best. Next is the Nakoma Dragon — Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired, 7,003 yards through mountain meadow at 5,000 feet. Whitehawk Ranch rounds out the premium tier with regular Top 100 Public rankings.

Lake Tahoe has fewer courses in the immediate basin, but the headline course — Edgewood Tahoe — is one of the most photographed courses in the western US. The back nine runs along the South Shore waterline and it hosted the American Century Celebrity Championship for decades. It is a genuine bucket-list round.

Graeagle wins on course variety. Lake Tahoe wins on scenery and the single best course in the region.

Lodging

Graeagle has boutique mountain lodging: Chalet View Lodge, River Pines Resort (townhomes on the Feather River), and Plumas Pines Resort (steps from the first tee). No casinos, no chain hotels.

Lake Tahoe has Edgewood Tahoe Resort (on-course luxury), Caesars Republic Tahoe, and the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe. Casino lodging at South Shore adds an après-golf dimension Graeagle does not have.

Who each region is right for

Choose Graeagle if...
Your group wants maximum course variety, values a private mountain experience, or is planning a 4-5 day dedicated golf trip. Graeagle rewards groups who want to play 5 courses in 5 days without logistics headaches.
🏔
Choose Lake Tahoe if...
Your group has never played Edgewood Tahoe and that bucket-list round is the point of the trip. Also right for groups mixing golfers and non-golfers who want casino entertainment alongside golf.

Can you do both?

Yes — and many groups do. Graeagle is 1.5 hours from South Lake Tahoe via Highway 89. A 5-day trip can cover three Graeagle courses (days 1–3) and Edgewood Tahoe plus Lake Tahoe Golf Course (days 4–5). GTHS builds this as a single contract with lodging in both regions.
