Our Point Of View

There are few courses that leave a marked memory like Old Greenwood does!  Jack Nicklaus outdid himself with this design.  Cut through massive Ponderosa Pines over rolling terrain, the layout could not be more challenging, but equally satisfying.   The course is big and beautiful and demands the absolute best of your game in all phases to score low.  The greens are fair sized, but multiple tiers, speedy conditions, and subtle breaks will have you relieved with a two-putt par.  Entry points to most greens are narrow, and steep-faced bunkers do their job in penalizing a mis-clubbed approach.  Nonetheless, regardless of score, you will be genuinely satisfied, if not giddy, by the beauty, impeccably manicured grounds, and all-around majesty of this jewel!  Once will not be enough as you’ll surely add Old Greenwood to your annual golf adventure in the Sierras, especially when paired with its sister course, Gray’s Crossing.  There are no better 36 holes in Northern California!

The “HACK”

Most green entrances are narrow, with the majority of greens favoring a left-side entry point. If at all possible, play in these areas. Going at pins protected by steep-faced bunkers will make for a long, frustrating day.
Old Greenwood has mostly rolling topography, with very little significant elevation change. It is the perfect course to walk if you’re able and willing, or just want to take your time experiencing the lost art of a good walk spoiled.
A perfect group package for the mountain-loving golf troupe would include a stay at the Cedar House Sport hotel and a world-class, casual dining experience at Moody’s in downtown Truckee.

Very private feeling yet public.Lots of rules which makes it feel private.. I was treated as a member, but was only... there to use their practice facilities. Loaded my bag for me and directed me to driving range. Very professional and courteous. Wish I lived closer it would be my home course.read more

Okay. This is like playing a video game. Golf courses in the real world don’t look like this. Check out the photos if... you’re dubious. Easily the most beautiful course I’ve ever played that wasn’t beside the ocean and even then….just a magical place. If that wasn’t enough, the staff was a joy! The pros, the bartender, the starter…they were all wonderful. People at places like this are typically full of themselves but not here. Even the group in front of us was a joy.We also saw two bucks dining on the fringe around the 14th green. And I hit a 202-yard 9-iron on the famous 13th. My wife nearly aced 16!read more

I surprise reserved this golf course for my wife & I one day in advance. Something came up and we were unable to play... the round. The two others in our foursome still played at the desired tee time. I wouldn't normally be bothered, but I checked the available tee times the day of (just a few hours before) and they had multiple openings the entire day. Even had multiple slots within 30 minutes of the tee time that we reserved. I would totally understand if this was fully booked, but they still charged me the full price of the round ($300). Not life changing money, but a joke of a business decision by their management. Gave it 2 stars because my friends that played said it was a solid course. Highly recommend playing other courses in Truckee/Tahoe with a reasonable management team.read more

Old Greenwood was the location of one of two courses in Truckee we played for the 20th anniversary of a weekend... tournament my friend puts on annually. This year, we played Memorial Day weekend. First, the course was in good condition considering the time of year when the effects of the winter are still present. As a Nicklaus design, it is a great and thoughtful layout, one of my favorites in the region from that perspective. We had a group of 16 playing 36 holes on Sunday. Four times starting at 8:00 a.m., four times starting at 2:00 p.m. The trip organizer arranged for a box lunch to be ready for us between rounds so as not to overwhelm the restaurant staff all at once and to ensure we would not hold anyone up for our afternoon rounds. We had also planned to eat dinner on their patio following the afternoon rounds. All players arrive at the course no later than 7:15 only to be told for the first time they have bumped all our times back 30 minutes. No due to any weather issue like frost, they just decided to accommodate other groups who wished not to be behind an outing. No food was available at the course at this point either. The young man greeting us when we arrived out front was unfriendly and acted like he would rather be doing anything else except what he was doing at that moment. As groups began finishing the first round, no boxed lunches were available, the staff on site said they knew nothing about them (our trip organizer paid for them in advance so there was a record of them) and said we were on our own. Now, 16 of us all end up ordering from the patio grill where one cook is on duty. After completing our second round, we are told the patio will close at 7:00 and we can't eat dinner there after confirming that was our plan just prior to the trip.A few of the staff who were helping with carts after the round were friendly but the majority, including on-course marshals, were gruff and unpleasant.Beginning to end, just an all around disappointing experience.read more
