The Drive from the Bay Area
From San Francisco, Lake Tahoe's South Shore is 195 miles — typically 3.5 hours via I-80 East to US-50 East. North Shore (Incline Village, Truckee, Old Greenwood) is 210–225 miles, also 3.5–4 hours, but stay on I-80 all the way to Truckee rather than taking US-50. From the East Bay, subtract 20–30 minutes. From San Jose or the Peninsula, add 15–20 minutes.
Friday afternoon I-80 over Donner Summit can be slow in summer — plan to leave by noon or push the drive to Saturday morning. Most Bay Area groups leave Saturday morning, arrive for a 1:00 pm tee time at Incline Village or Coyote Moon, and check into the casino that evening.
The Courses: What to Play
Lake Tahoe has six championship courses within 30 minutes of each other. No other mountain destination in the western United States concentrates this much designer golf in one region. Here is how to think about them for a Bay Area group trip:
“Bay Area groups almost always ask about Edgewood first. Once they see Old Greenwood and Coyote Moon on the same trip, they start planning to come back the following year.”
— Sean Schaeffer, GTHS Founder
The Standard Bay Area Golf Trip to Tahoe
The most popular itinerary for Bay Area groups is 3 nights, 3 rounds — arriving Saturday morning, departing Tuesday. This avoids Friday night Bay Area traffic, gives a full day on Sunday and Monday for the premium courses, and gets everyone back Tuesday before the week starts.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Saturday | Drive from Bay Area. Arrive by 12:30 pm. Afternoon round at Incline Village or Coyote Moon (1:30 pm tee). Check into casino resort. |
| Sunday | Main event — Edgewood Tahoe (8:00 am). Full day. Group dinner at casino. |
| Monday | Old Greenwood or Gray's Crossing (8:30 am). Drive home Monday afternoon — Bay Area by 6 pm. |
Fly vs Drive: The Honest Answer
Reno-Tahoe International (RNO) is the closest airport — 45 minutes from Incline Village, 60 minutes from South Shore. From San Francisco, SFO to RNO is a 55-minute flight, but with airport time and car rental, the door-to-course time is 4+ hours versus 3.5 hours by car. Flying makes sense if you are coming from LA or further.
Sacramento (SMF) is worth considering for East Bay and Peninsula groups — it is 2 hours from South Shore, flights from SFO to SMF run under an hour, and car rental at SMF is less congested than SFO. But most Bay Area groups driving together in one or two vehicles find the I-80 drive easier than coordinating flights and car rentals.
Lodging: Casino Resort vs On-Course
South Shore offers casino resort lodging — Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe and Harrah's Lake Tahoe are the primary partners. Group rates run $180–$280 per night. Casino floor, group dining, entertainment, and the lake are all steps away. This is the right choice for groups that want the full Tahoe experience.
North Shore offers the Old Greenwood resort cottages — 3 and 4-bedroom private residences adjacent to the Jack Nicklaus course. These are ideal for groups that want a more private, golf-focused trip. The cottages sleep 4–6 people, with full kitchens and multiple bathrooms. At $320–$480 per night for the unit, the per-person cost is comparable to casino rooms.
