Our Point Of VIew

Pure.  Wilderness.  Golf.  Simply enough, there really is no better way to express just what a round at Coyote Moon offers.  But nature isn’t the only enticement; the course layout is, with a few exceptions, absolutely outstanding.  Numerous up- and downhill dog legs and constant elevation changes have made the most of the varying topography available to the designer, Brad Bell.   Club selection, while taking the 6,300 feet above sea level elevation into account, is paramount if you want to avoid the steep banks, bunkers, and native areas that surround most green complexes.  A range finder with an elevation adjustment is your best friend at Coyote Moon when you’re after a low score.  It will come in really handy as you decide what club to hit on the par 3 13th, which features a 200 foot drop over Trout Creek to the green below the tee box.  If you’re more interested in enjoying the surrounding aesthetic, you will find no better course to appreciate.  The afternoon’s long shadows and ever-present wildlife will create one of the most zen-like, tranquil golf experiences you’ll find on earth, and that is no overstatement.  The peace of the forest comes through soft and lightly as you manage each challenging shot.  Take your time for this one!  There is no reason to rush this kind of quiet.

Signature Hole

The 13th hole is a spectacular 227-yard par 3 where the tee shot falls more than 200 feet down to an oblong green fronted by Trout Creek and rugged native terrain. The hole plays two-to-three clubs less than normal, but pay attention to the pin location and adjust club selection accordingly. Take a deep breath, clear your mind and concentrate on the shot on this breathtaking and dangerous par 3.

Exceptional Golf Experience

No Matter the time of day

At The Moon, you’re sure to experience wildlife up close like you never have while playing golf. You’ll want to take a moment to watch the herd of resident Mule deer bucks laze their way across a fairway, or the coyote pups as they frolic outside their den in the giant boulders behind the 12 green. A round at Coyote Moon offers more than pristine golf; it’s more an experience with nature.

The “HACK”

Coyote Moon is the perfect track to play as the first or last round of a multi-day golf excursion with your buddies, as you make your way into Reno.
If you’re basing your outing out of Truckee, make sure to include Coyote Moon, Old Greenwood, and Gray’s Crossing as the perfect trifecta of golf. You can then enjoy the outstanding fare, jazz, and beautiful people at Moody’s Bar and Bistro in downtown Truckee.
Hit nothing more than your 185 yard club off the tee on hole no. 14 and favor the right side of the fairway if you have that shot in your arsenal. The hole is quirky and a shorter tee shot leaves only a low- to mid-iron over the quaking Aspens and Trout Creek to the narrow green. A putt down the hill is lightning quick…..so be delicate.

Challenge from the start. Phone system didn’t work and no one would return a call. Only when the pro from another local... course was kind enough to reach out for us did they respond. Rough reception when we arrived and seemed like we were bothering the guy checking us in. Golf course itself, Bill the starter and pace of play gets a much higher rating. Bill the starter was friendly, knowledgeable and almost made up for the poor service received by the golf shop staff.read more

Pretty course. But a complete waste of money. Let me explain. As a travel writer I play hundreds of courses all over... and this particular one is one of my least favorites. First you pay $175 and the driving range is two mats, hitting into a net. Second as of September 11, the website offers a “new breakfast menu” which was non existent. The manager used COVID as an excuse which is fine. but don’t advertise what you don’t have, we drove two hours to play there and got there early expecting to have a great breakfast before our round. Finally there was no cart girl the entire round! So no food or drinks of any kind, and no water on the course. We saw her there packing the cart when we got there apparently she decided she didn’t want to work and decided to go home. All of these things are fine but if you charge $175 have at least water on the course, find someone to drive the food cart, and for god sake update your website so people don’t drive two hours expecting one thing just to get something else.read more
