Our Point of View

An air of over-confidence has turned to intrepidation for many teeing off the 1st hole at Gray’s Crossing.  At first glance, it appears to be straight-forward, with wide fairways and large greens begging for hefty swings and fearlessly lashed at approach shots.  You’ll quickly understand why caution will win the day, however.  Yes, the greens are big and generous access points reward accuracy, but you’ll find that there are secrets to be known to make for a low round.  Many greens are spined with unforgiving fall-aways over the back, and sloped landing zones off the tee can turn an apparent beauty into a sagebrush-laden nightmare of a recovery shot.   Many tee shots are smartly played with  less than driver, as landing zone runouts will find native areas unseen from tee boxes.  Without doubt though, there are numerous opportunities for sub-par scores if played with caution.  A reachable Par 4 on each side offers solace to the other beautiful, longer holes throughout the course.  All Par 5s are reachable and are birdie opportunities, less hole 18, which takes two monster shots to clear the native beranka.  In any case of success or struggle, you’ll enjoy every minute of your round at Gray’s Crossing, especially as you reflect on it while sipping a frosty draft on the deck at PJs, Gray’s Crossing’s lovely bar restaurant that overlooks the 18th hole and Mt. Rose beyond.

The “HACK”

It is an absolute must to enjoy a post-round libation at PJ’s Restaurant under the early evening alpenglow, overlooking the 18th hole and the back side of Mt. Rose in the distance.
It’s best to play the par 5s on the front nine to the front of the greens, whether it be your second or third shot. Trouble aplenty exists over the backside of these crowned greens.

Absolutely wonderful golf experience! Staff was friendly and courteous, course was beautiful and well kept, and the... setting was breathtaking. Very reasonable afternoon rates as well. $125 for 18 top-notch holes, a cart, and complimentary range balls is tough to beat! Would definitely play here again if given the opportunity.read more

'21/7 1st time customer/review:-- Easy access off freeway in Truckee, but no noise from it. Very pictuesque with tall... pines-- Bring A-game or be prepared to lose a lot of balls.-- Very well groomed (visibly different fairway, rough, very rough, & wild area), challenging course open to the public at $240/round/person (carts and range balls included). While not many water hazards, there is plenty of wild areas within the fairway & flanking which require club knowledge & lay-up judgement--not to mention slopes, turns, and sand traps a plenty.-- Pool open to members.-- Decent sized, indoor/outdoor seating restaurant.-- Helpful staff (inc cart boys before/after round).read more

Great course. kind and attentive employees. Took off a star due to not being able to take cart after round to car to... put clubs away in car. First golf course I’ve been been to where that’s a thing. Not a complaint just a bummer for lack of ease post round.read more

Solid course, but don’t expect them to be honest about the playing conditions. Greens and tee boxes were heavily... sanded, and it was cart path only despite two weeks of beautiful weather. The pro shop didn’t disclose l, and no way to k ow until you were on the 1st tee box!A little honesty can go a long way. Very disappointed in their professionalism.read more
